Death
Death is not the end. " It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" (Hebrews 9:27) Physical death means the separation of the soul and spirit from the body. Spiritual death means separation from God, a state we are all born into at physical birth, and the reason why we need to be born again.
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. (John 3:7)
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (1Peter 1:23)
For those who persist on the Broad Way till death overtakes them, the Bible clearly teaches that the body is buried in the grave or otherwise disposed of, but the soul and spirit are in conscious existence in Hell. There they remain until the last day when the body (no matter how it is disposed of) and the soul and spirit will be reunited to stand before the great judgment throne of Christ to hear the final sentence passed.
For those who turn off the Broad Way onto the Narrow and are "born again", death means " to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8). T he body is buried in the grave or otherwise disposed of, but the soul and spirit are in conscious existence with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven awaiting the resurrection and reuniting of body soul and spirit when Christ comes again to take all believers in this Church age to be with Himself.
The following teaching was given by the Lord Jesus personally. Note that death is not the end of consciousness, memory, feeling or perception. It is however the end of choice. From this point on the ultimate destiny is fixed and there is no crossing the gulf that divides the broad and narrow ways.
" And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." (Luke 16:22-31)
